arXiv

arXiv (pronounced 'archive') is an open-access electronic repository of preprints and other scholarly papers in physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, statistics, electrical engineering, economics, and related fields. Founded in August 1991 by theoretical physicist Paul Ginsparg at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the service began as a simple bulletin board for high-energy physics preprints that researchers had been emailing each other as TeX files. It moved to Cornell University in 2001 and is scheduled to spin off as an independent nonprofit on July 1, 2026. arXiv is the canonical example of Green Open Access: authors deposit their own manuscripts, which remain freely downloadable and citable regardless of whether or where the paper is later formally published. As of late 2024 it receives roughly 24,000 new submissions per month and passed two million total articles in 2021. It is one of the ten largest sources of open versions of scholarly works indexed by services like Unpaywall. Quality control on arXiv is light by design. Submissions are screened by volunteer subject-area moderators and filtered through an endorsement system (introduced in 2004) that requires first-time authors in a category to be vouched for by an established researcher. arXiv does not perform peer review; that role is left to journals and conferences. Critics argue the endorsement requirement can exclude legitimate outsiders, while supporters credit it with keeping pseudoscience and spam off the platform. arXiv has been called a transformative scientific infrastructure, named by Nature in 2021 as one of the ten computer codes that changed science. It directly inspired later domain-specific preprint servers such as bioRxiv, medRxiv, ChemRxiv, and SSRN, and Ginsparg himself received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2002 for the project.
