William Stanley Jevons

William Stanley Jevons (1835-1882) was an English economist and logician, one of the central figures in the marginal revolution of the 1870s. He is best known today for three contributions: the marginal utility theory of value, the founding text of energy economics (The Coal Question), and the Jevons paradox on efficiency and consumption. Born in Liverpool, Jevons spent five years as an assayer at the Royal Mint in Sydney before returning to England to study economics and logic. In 1871 he published The Theory of Political Economy, which independently developed a mathematical marginalist framework alongside Carl Menger in Austria and Léon Walras in Switzerland. The three are credited with reorienting economics from classical labor- and cost-based value theories toward subjective marginal utility. His 1865 The Coal Question warned that Britain's coal-based industrial supremacy was on borrowed time, and famously argued that efficiency improvements in coal use had increased, not decreased, total consumption — the observation now known as the Jevons paradox. He also produced influential early work on the use of statistics and time series in economics, including a controversial theory linking business cycles to solar activity. In logic, Jevons built one of the first mechanical reasoning machines (the "logical piano") and made early contributions to Boolean logic and the philosophy of science. He died in 1882 by drowning while swimming on holiday. His work shaped both neoclassical economics and the long tradition of resource-and-energy thinking that runs from his coal anxieties to modern debates over AI compute.
