Köppen Climate Classification: The Standard System for World Climate Types

Devised by Wladimir Köppen around 1884, the most widely used world climate typology. Its insight is that vegetation integrates climate, so category thresholds mark real ecological boundaries. Codes combine a main group (A tropical, B arid, C temperate, D continental, E polar) with letters for precipitation seasonality and temperature detail — Csa is Mediterranean, Dfb humid continental with warm summers.

Maritime Climate Moderation: Why Coasts Have Milder Winters

Water's specific heat capacity is roughly four times that of soil or rock, and mixing, evaporation and light penetration spread that heat through a deep layer. Oceans therefore absorb heat in summer and release it slowly through winter, lagging the seasons and moderating air masses that cross them. The inverse is continentality — greater annual temperature range further inland — with ocean currents adding a second, sometimes larger effect.
