Creative Commons Licensing
Creative Commons is a family of standardized public copyright licenses launched in 2002 by a U.S. nonprofit co-founded by Lawrence Lessig. Six core licenses are built from four interchangeable elements (BY, SA, NC, ND), with CC0 added in 2009 as a public-domain dedication. The system underpins large parts of the open commons (Wikipedia, OpenStreetMap, Stack Overflow, MIT OpenCourseWare) but carries known tradeoffs: SA is virally copyleft, NC has chronically ambiguous scope, and ND blocks remixing.
CC0 Public Domain Dedication
CC0 is a Creative Commons legal tool released in 2009 that lets a rights holder waive copyright and neighbouring rights as completely as the law allows, with a fallback permissive license in jurisdictions where outright waiver is not possible. It became the de facto standard for open scientific data and was used by Unsplash for several years.
Public Domain
The public domain is the body of creative works not protected by copyright, either because protection expired, was forfeited, was waived, or never applied. Works in the public domain can be freely used, copied, modified, and sold without permission. Boundaries vary by jurisdiction and have been pushed back repeatedly by copyright term extensions.
e-Estonia: The Digital Society
e-Estonia is Estonia's digital-government ecosystem, with about 99% of public services online. Built on the 1996 Tiger Leap program, the X-Road data exchange layer, mandatory digital ID cards (2002), internet voting (2005), and the e-Residency program (2014), it made Estonia a global e-governance leader.
Right to Internet Access
The right to Internet access holds that people must be able to access the Internet to exercise other rights like free expression. Finland (2010) was first to legislate a 1 Mbps broadband right; Estonia, France, Costa Rica, Greece, Spain and India have given access varying legal recognition. The UN has affirmed online rights without establishing a universal free-internet entitlement.
Practical Obscurity: The Privacy You Actually Have in Public
Privacy in public was never invisibility — it was three practical frictions: observation is transient, you are anonymous in a crowd, and attention is scarce. A recording contains no information a bystander couldn't have observed, which is why 'it only captures what others could see' feels compelling; it misses that recording deletes ephemerality while keeping the pixels identical. Recording, facial recognition and automation remove the three frictions one each.
Camera Glasses Misconceptions: 'Only What Others Could See', 'Already Out There', and Open Source
'It only records what others could see' is true and beside the point; 'a camera is one more set of eyes' assumes a human observer with human limits; 'it's already out there' conflates self-surveillance with other-surveillance. Google Glass didn't prove the market rejects camera glasses — it proved people reject looking like they're wearing one. The novel element is identification rather than recording, and it lives in the AI backend, which open-sourcing the hardware doesn't touch.
The 'Internet as a Human Right' Meme vs. Estonia's Real Policy
A popular meme claims internet-as-a-right believers "are usually from Estonia." The reality: Estonia added internet to its universal-service list in 2000 (affordable nationwide access, not free internet), while Finland's 2010 law making 1 Mbps broadband a legal right is the more legally grounded version. The meme conflates 'fast, cheap, everywhere' with 'free as a right.'

A phone has a tell — someone raises it and points it, and you can object. Glasses remove that, recording covertly and continuously from eye level in every context, so the bystander gets no notice and never consented. Everything else stacks on that asymmetry: chilling effects, contexts a pocketed phone never enters, manufacturer trust deficits, and AI turning recording into identification.
