seL4 (Microkernel)

GNU Hurd

GNU Hurd is the GNU Project's microkernel-based operating-system kernel, in development since 1990 as the originally intended free Unix-like kernel for the GNU system. Built on top of Mach (later GNU Mach), it has never reached production readiness; Richard Stallman has publicly attributed the delay to the choice of Mach and to the deep difficulty of writing a microkernel-based Unix, while a free alternative -- Linux -- captured the ecosystem in the meantime.

Why the X Window System Is So Byzantine

Why Google Wave Failed

Google Wave launched at Google I/O in May 2009 as the Rasmussen brothers' attempt to reinvent email by fusing IM, documents, and wikis into shared real-time "waves." Confused positioning, an invite-only beta, a slow and crowded interface, and a buggy extension ecosystem produced anaemic adoption, and Google announced its sunset in August 2010. The codebase moved to Apache Wave (retired 2018), while the underlying operational transformation engine lives on inside Google Docs.
